Product of the Month

BATTINGS!!
That essential item that makes a quilt, a quilt!  We have a HUGE range of battings in store – you might not see them as they live in the second room, but they’re there!!  So we thought we’d give you a bit of a run down on what we have and why we stock them.  Here goes……..

From Matilda’s own
All Matilda’s own battings are sourced from Australian products and are proudly manufactured in Australia.  They are needle punched for strength and to create a soft drape, so there are no glues, resins, sprays or adhesives used in these battings.  Matilda’s own battings are all machine washable, have low to medium lofts and use the very best of fibres.  We have the following battings on the roll and they are 2.4m wide – big enough for Queen size quilts, but if you do have a King size quilt we can order in a pre-cut King of those waddings marked with an *

Wool/Poly – 60% wool/40% poly *
Soft and easy to handle by hand or machine.  Great for those with allergies.  Made from a unique blend of fibres to increase loft and produce a soft feel.  Pre-washed and pre-shrunk.

Wool/poly also comes in a pre-pack (2.7m x 2.4m) of charcoal – great for enriching the fabrics of dark coloured quilts – which we can order in for you.

Wool/Cotton – 40% wool/60% cotton
Wool/cotton offers the best of both worlds – warm for Winter and cool for Summer.  It has a medium loft, soft feel and is all natural.

100% Cotton *
Made from 100% Australian cotton, it is cotton-seed free and sourced from the best fibres.  For a traditional low-loft result, cotton is a favourite.  It’s very soft to the touch and easy to needle by machine or by hand.

100% cotton also comes in a pre-pack (2.7m x 2.4m) of bleached cotton – perfect for white based quilts – which we can order in for you.

Cotton/Poly – 80% cotton/20% poly
Made from a unique blend of Australian cotton and poly fibres to produce a soft wadding that is especially nice to hand quilt with, but also good on the machine.

From Quilters’Dream
Quilters Dream Battings are premium quality quilt battings that will provide warmth, drape, volume, definition and support to your quilt through generations and is made in the USA.  The blended fibres are specially carded, cross-lapped, and needle-punched for strength, consistency, and a beautiful soft drape. There are no scrims, glues, or other binders to resist the needle, so this fine batting can be hand or machine quilted with ease.
We carry pre-cut batts from crib to Queen size and can order King size on request.

Whichever batting you use will come down to personal choice; different battings appeal to different quilters for reasons of cost, drape, handle and look.  We hope we’ve given you an insight into what we stock to help make your choice easier!

Books

Some books from our shelves that you may not have seen before…….

::  Recycled Hexie Quilts” by Mary Kerr.  Using vintage hexagons in today’s quilts.  More than 140 colour images, with both traditional and contemporary designs, show how vintage hexagon textile fragments can be repurposed and fashioned into new, beautiful quilts. Over the last century, hundreds of hexagon (fondly termed “hexie”) patterns were published and thousands of quilts were started―yet many of these textiles were never finished. Other quilts were damaged from overuse and neglect. This book shows fifty-two new quilts inspired by these neglected hexagon textiles. See how this basic shape can be employed in a wide variety of combinations and patterns, both traditional and modern. Packed with ideas and tips, this practical yet art-filled guide will inspire quilters to try new designs by drawing on the power of hexies from the past.

:: “Imagine Quilts” by Dana Bolyard.  With this terrific collection of quilt patterns, popular blogger Dana Bolyard invites quilters of all ages and skill levels to innovate and create.
  • Fascinating designs range in size from small wall hangings to bed-sized quilts
  • Unique projects are organized into four groups: combining colors based on your stash, using traditional blocks in new ways, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and breaking the rules
  • Step-by-step instructions ensure success, teach skills, and spark ideas for future projects
:: “Quirky Little Quilts” by Sheryl Johnson of Temecular Quilt Company.  Mismatched blocks, make-do colours, planned mistakes, and happy surprises…..it's all good at Temecula Quilt Company! Inspired by quilts of the nineteenth century, 15 petite patchwork quilts invite you to play with reproduction fabrics in quirky ways.  Try wonky layouts, unexpected block pairings, and blends of colour where anything goes. The results are instantly endearing, just like the quilts of yesteryear.

With Sheryl Johnson's "make-do" philosophy, you can use a scrappy fabric assortment to create charming, stress-free quilts that celebrate one-of-a-kind choices. Patterns are small, cute, and quick to stitch, each with a perfectly imperfect personality all its own. What a liberating way to quilt!
:: “Homestyle Quilts” by Kim Diehl and Laurie Baker.  Best-selling author Kim Diehl and talented designer Laurie Baker have lots of ideas for fitting creativity into your busy life. Now you can choose a terrific quilt pattern, quickly stir up a tasty supper, and go sew!
  • Select from 13 beautiful patchwork quilts for the bed, wall, lap, and table; several include lovely applique
  • Enjoy that famous Kim Diehl charm in simple, accessible projects
  • Try recipes for soups, a casserole, chicken pot pie, and other delectable dishes that require little of your precious time
