March 2020

Our time at the Australasian Embroidery Convention (AEC) in Brisbane was simply fabulous!  It’s always so good to meet some of our on-line customers when we do interstate shows, and regular customers from other Brisbane shows we’ve done.  Plus some of our Melbourne locals travelled to Brisbane especially for the AEC!  It was such a resounding success the Event Organiser will be running it again next year.  And we’ll be returning there too!

BOM Update

We have several new Block of the Month Quilts and Clubs for you for 2020.  If you’re interested in any (or all!) of them, please contact the shop for further details.

The Secret Garden
This stunning quilt features a striking center mandala surrounded by a garden of folk fantasy, and overflowing with secret, hidden delights! Featuring artisan dyed wool felt applique and woven textured fabrics, also available in month 1 is a thread pack containing 13 Valdani threads and 1 Holoshimmer Thread.
Ronda Dechado
Designed by our own Meredithe Clark, this new BOM incorporates the six new templates Meredithe released last year into one stunning quilt.  Each month you’ll receive a new template set including instructions on how to make the required block/s, and in the last month, how to put the whole quilt together.  And the name?  It was conceived in Ronda, Spain and Dechado means “sampler” in Spanish! Contact us for details.

Roxanne’s Glue Baste-It
Roxanne's Glue-Baste-It is 100% water soluble, dries in minutes. Hold in place firmly but can be easily pulled away.  The two way applicator tips allow for controlled placement of glue.  Does not feel stiff when dry and contains no dyes, waxes or harmful chemicals.

Diagonal Seam Tape
Diagonal Seam Tape is simply washi tape that is placed on the front plate of your sewing machine to act as a guide while you are sewing diagonal seams.
The tape is strong, thin, sticks well to almost any surface, and comes off easily.  Each roll has 10 yards of tape so it should last a really long time.
The red line in the centre is aligned with the needle of your machine, and the black lines on either side are 1/4″ to each side from the centre of the lines, to represent a 1/4″ seam allowance.  The black lines won’t replace a piecing foot with a perfect 1/4″, but act as an extra guide.
The tape removes cleanly, but it is recommended that you remove or replace the tape often or after each project to avoid any residue on your machine.   This tape is not meant to be a permanent fixture on the machine, and long term use without replacement may result in some residue to clean off.

Crochet Hooks!
Yes, we now stock crochet hooks in a variety of sizes.  The perfect accompaniment to our crochet patterns!

:: Full Circlestyled by Sarah J and inspired by Judie Rothermel.  Sarah Maxwell considers a fresh approach to reproduction quilt fabrics with “Full Circle”, inspired in part by her own stash of treasured Judie Rothermel prints, in part by input from other reproduction stashers wanting new ideas and inspiration to create exciting new masterpiece quilts, and in part by feedback from younger quilters wanting to use repro designs in their projects, but wanting a “vibrant”, more contemporary palette for home décor and heirloom projects. The result is some of the very best prints from Judie’s archives, subtly re-coloured to appeal to a wider range of quilters.  Full range available.

:: “Richmond C 1862”  by Nancy Gere features rich florals in shades of navy, aubergine, ivory and charcoal. This reproduction collection is both delicate and dramatic. Wallpaper florals, a sweet ditzy flower, a vine stripe and geometric blenders round out the collection.  10 selected fabrics.

:: Chatham Row by Paula Barnes  The “Chatham Row” stripe is back in stock so get in quick as this one walked out for the shop!

:: County Clare Panel”  by Karen Styles.  This is another fabric that was extremely popular and you’ll need to grab it quickly now that it’s back in stock.

Books

This month we’re featuring Australian authors in our “Books” section.  If you don’t own a copy of any of the following, get them now as our Aussie quilters have made their mark world-wide with these wonderful books.

::  Hat Creek Quilts  by Deirdre Bond-Abel.  Deirdre Bond-Abel's book gives prominence to wool appliques in gleaming colours matched to pieced blocks in highly original creations.  Motifs from the past, in a new style and in a palette of magnificent colours and materials are explored in 17 quilt projects.

::  Whizz Bang!  by Rachel Daisy.  Rachaeldaisy designs colourful and whimsical circles made of Prairie Points using all types of fabrics – from silk, taffeta, silk organza, recycled shirts, hankies, and linen – and then embellishes them with doilies, yo-yo’s, rickrack, buttons …. you name it!  The result is an explosion of trendy and Bohemian quilts never seen before.  Rachael’s first book, a complete guide to her adventures, full of in-depth tips and step by steps illustrated with 15 sumptuous quilts that will make your head spin!

::  Quilts for Life Made with Love  by Judy Newman.  Judy Newman presents her quilting story with advice on choosing colours, fabrics and her favourite products.  The 18 projects, both large and small, feature detailed diagrams and templates. The photography and overall design of the book are stunning.

::  Seams Like Yesterday  by Karen Styles has 15 projects with English paper piecing, stars and medallions as well as a magnificent sampler quilt. Stars are a strong feature in Karen's designs – she loves the precise piecing of stars, especially eight-pointed stars!

That’s it for now – thanks for reading to the end!
Until next time
